2004 Fellows

The Rev. Bertram G. Bennett Jr.

The Reverend Bertram G. Bennett, Jr., was born in New York City in 1951. He became a priest in 1978 and has been priest-in-charge of the historically Afro-American St. David’s Church in the Bronx since 1980. He is involved with the Inter-Parish Council and he is the Chair of South Bronx Church's Housing Task Force.

Spotters cited Father Bennett’s outstanding, unrecognized leadership in the redevelopment of the South Bronx, including creation of one thousand units of Nehemiah Housing, two alternative public high schools, and eighty housing units at a nearby senior center.

Father Bennett used his fellowship to study community organizing in South Africa.
