Ms. Peng is a retired New York City public school teacher, a published poet, and a former warden in her parish. She has been a leader in the Industrial Areas Foundation for more than twenty-five years. In the 1970’s, she was active in school reform efforts in East Harlem. Currently she works with Upper Manhattan Together, formerly known as the East Harlem Partnership for Change. The group has taken on many neighborhood problems, from poor mail service to substandard grocery stores. Ms. Peng is also a leader in a local theatre group, AMAS, that provides musical theatre experiences for young people of color who otherwise would not have the financial means to participate.
One Trinity Grants’ spotter described Ms. Peng this way: “Never one to boast or draw attention to herself, Ms. Peng has communicated quietly to those who encounter her that leading in the public arena is simply what a real faith leader does.”
She spent her fellowship supporting community groups in which she is involved.
