Dr. Nell Braxton Gibson

Dr. Gibson is coordinator of the national Episcopal Urban Caucus and chair of the Reparations Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. She has long experience as a catalyst for social transformation, both in Metropolitan New York and nationally. As assistant to New York Bishop Paul Moore Jr., she helped lead the fight in the 1980’s to divest in apartheid South Africa. As a New York lay deputy, she shepherded the resolution supporting reparations for slavery through 2006 General Convention. In addition, she formerly worked with Episcopal Social Services and the National Council of Churches in Christ. She has coordinated the Episcopal Urban Caucus since 2005. A Spotter described her ministry as transformative on “local, national, and international levels,” citing her role as mentor to emerging leaders over the last two decades.
