During the Middle Ages, representations of the Nativity underwent changes that not only reflected trends in piety but also helped shape them. The first session (Dec. 6) introduces the narrative of the Nativity, discussing hte canon of component scenes, and the choice of representational mode. The second session (Dec. 13) concentrates on the individual characters of the story and changes in the way they were represented. The third session (Dec. 20) situates the art in the context of Medieval piety, discussing the role of different media in devotional practices of the time.
