Today we observe the feast of Saint Mary the Virgin, the mother of Christ. From the earliest days of the Church, Mary has been honored, perhaps above all others, in art and music. In today's gospel appointed for her feast day, we hear the beginning of the Magnificat, also known as The Song of Mary: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant."
Our celebration of Mary is evident in today's music, too. At the 11:15am service, the second stanza of the closing hymn is a paraphrase of an ancient Greek hymn which expresses our image of Mary in the company of all the saints: "O higher than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim, lead their praises, alleluia."
We also celebrate with a joyful setting of the Mass Ordinary (Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei) by Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548–1611), the great Spanish Renaissance composer. Victoria wrote more than 20 mass settings, and the Missa O Quam Gloriosum is a "Parody Mass," meaning that the musical motifs for each movement are borrowed from an existing work. In this case, Victoria uses his own motet for All Saints' Day, O Quam Gloriosum.
