Job Description

As Deputy for Faith Formation and Education I have the challenge of connecting the Gospel message to our 21st century lives. How is the message proclaimed? What resources and experiences strengthen believers in their faith and assist in their sharing it in the world? How are children and family formed in living lives enriched by the perspective of faith? How can Trinity support the Gospel locally, nationally and around the world? How can we invest resources entrusted to us to change the world? The cluster I am responsible for includes Trinity Institute, Trinity Grants Program, Trinity Preschool and the Clergy Leadership Project. It is fascinating to continue exploring how they are all connected.

People Contact Me Seeking

When it comes to grants the answer is money - although a grant actually is about a lot more than just money, and almost always includes dialogue, advice from others, a disciplined process, and in the end, hopefully, a relationship. Other calls are often about a problem, or need that has arisen. I am committed to hiring highly skilled people and holding them accountable for productive leadership. There is a lot of problem solving in effective ministries, and that takes a big bite out of most days, though it is crucial for me to stay focused on a big picture as well.

What Kind of Questions do I Typically Answer?

Most calls are seeking advice, such as expertise, referrals, or occasionally, information that I might have or be able to find. It is always satisfying when someone asks me a question I can actually answer! Usually when we ask questions of others, in some way or another we are seeking God, so when someone asks I know it pays to listen as carefully as I can. Over the years in the priesthood I have discovered that my deepest contribution is almost always in questions I pose rather than in the answers that I can give.
