James Carroll, preacher, has pursued his commitment to moral theology and social engagement as a Roman Catholic priest (1969 – 74) who served as chaplain at Boston University; a novelist whose popular books have been compared by reviewers with the moral fiction of Graham Greene; an author of nonfiction whose memoir An American Requiem: God, My Father, and the War that Came Between Us received the National Book Award in 1996; and as a regular op-ed columnist for the Boston Globe newspaper. His most recent publications include his tenth novel, Secret Father (2005) and two provocative works of nonfiction: Constatine's Sword: The Church and the Jews -- A History (a bestseller) and House of War (2006), a history of the Pentagon.
