Peter J. Gomes

The Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes has served since 1970 in The Memorial Church, Harvard University and since 1974 as Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church. He is most widely known for his New York Times and national best-selling books, The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart and Sermons: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living. He has preached all across the United States and England, including the millennial sermon in Canterbury Cathedral. In 1998 he presented The Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching in Yale Divinity School and was named Clergy of the Year by Religion in American Life. He appears frequently in the media, including CBS's 60 Minutes, and has been profiled in the New Yorker magazine. He was ordained an American Baptist minister by The First Baptist Church of Plymouth, Massachusetts, earned his S.T.B from Harvard Divinity School, and has received thirty honorary degrees.
