The Montgomery Monument

America’s first official monument has paid tribute to Major General Richard Montgomery from the Broadway porch of St. Paul’s Chapel since 1787. Montgomery died in December 1775 at the age of 37 leading a charge against a larger British force in the Battle of Quebec during the American Revolution. His monument was commissioned by the Continental Congress and created in France under the direction of Benjamin Franklin. In 2011, the monument underwent a full restoration.
