About the Trinity Youth Chorus

Community and Choral Excellence

The Trinity Youth Chorus is the voice of youth in Lower Manhattan, providing a unique musical environment for young singers. A collective of community choirs, the chorus offers music education and performance opportunities for girls and boys, ages 5-18.

The program emphasizes the social aspect of singing, brings together collaborative neighborhood partners, and teaches the importance of building bridges within our community. It offers children the opportunity to be part of a serious choral program that is:

  • Devoted to disciplined music-making through choral arts
  • The “in-residence” youth choir of Trinity Wall Street
  • A community that fosters the formation of character and engaged citizenship
  • Ethnically and culturally diverse

The Trinity Youth Chorus is led by experienced, dedicated professionals. We teach sight singing, music theory, and history. In the process, children learn about teamwork, collaboration, community, the joy of music, and most importantly, themselves. No prior musical training is required.

The Chorus consists of children from Lower Manhattan and the New York metropolitan area including students from P.S. 89, 234, I.S. 89, Stuyvesant High School, Claremont Preparatory, Millennium High School, The Church Street School for Music and Art, the “I Have A Dream” Chelsea-Elliott II program, and Brooklyn’s P.S. 315.

Diversity and Dedication

Our strength is in our diversity, in our love of music, and in our dedication to our young singers. Although Trinity Wall Street provides an extensive religious education program for youth, this is not a religious program. Youth are welcomed from any or no faith tradition. Children meet after school for rehearsals and instruction once a week in small groups according to their ages.

Performance Opportunities

The Trinity Youth Chorus often performs in two annual concerts, occasional Sunday services, and special events throughout the city and beyond. The Chorus has most recently been heard in the movie Doubt starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffmann, and featured on Public Radio International, the CBS Early Show, the Tribeca Family Festival, and the Philadelphia Italian Market Festival.

Getting Started

We welcome all young people, regardless of their musical experience or background. We’re looking for mature students with an interest in singing and the commitment to attend weekly rehearsals. The choirmaster will evaluate each student’s conduct, singing ability, and reading skills. There is no preparation required for the audition.

Voice from the Choir

Dante Vega and his mom, Liz Lamere

“My favorite memory of the choristers was when we sang in the Tribeca Film Festival. We were all singing and afterwards we just had a really great time, we were all socializing and we were all becoming really great friends.” - Dante

“The choristers are very focused. That’s one of the things we love about it-- even though there’s a great sense of community and friendship and there’s a social aspect to it, there’s really a sense of discipline that comes from within. The kids are genuinely interested in being there and singing together.” - Liz
