All Our Children, an initiative co-founded by the Diocese of New York and Trinity to encourage partnerships between churches and public schools, is getting noticed all over the country, thanks to Bishop Cathy Roskam, and getting a helping hand from the Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop, as well.
Writing about All Our Children in her monthly column for Episcopal Life , Bishop Katharine Jefferts-Schori called the initiative "an invitation to put our baptismal covenant into action – to affirm the dignity of every young human being in the schools in our neighborhoods."
While encouraging and funding other parishes to be involved with local schools, Trinity is part of the pilot AOC program, as well. In addition to the already established tutoring relationship with Leadership High School on Trinity Place, Anita Chan, Matt Heyd and a school partnership committee of staff and congregation members are forging new relationships at the Wildcat Academy on West Street and PS 140, an elementary school on the Lower East Side.
Wildcat is a charter school that serves older students who have little chance of graduating with a Regents' diploma elsewhere. Trinity will be tutoring there for the Regents' exams throughout the rest of this school year and the summer. Readers from Trinity went to PS 140 to read aloud to first, second, and third graders on April 22. The school includes a number of homeless students.
The next round of All Our Children grants – both new and reapplications – will take place in May. To find out more about how you can be part of Trinity's volunteer efforts with our local school partners, contact Anita Chan at achan@trinitywallstreet.org or 212-602-0846.
