Earlier this year, the All Our Children Book Buddies—twenty-five sixth graders matched with adult volunteers— met for the first time after corresponding for four months. All Our Children, founded by the Diocese of New York and Trinity Wall Street, encourages partnerships between Episcopal parishes and their local public schools.
The “buddies” read The Westing Game and exchanged letters electronically with the help of Learning Leaders, a Trinity partner and the largest volunteer coordinator organization in the New York City public schools.
The Episcopal book buddy volunteers included Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and Bishop Catherine Roskam of New York, as well as Trinity’s congregation and staff, and staff and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
“Schools that educate the children of our communities are a vital part of loving our neigh- bors as ourselves,” Jefferts Schori said. “Abundant life has something essential to do with using all the gifts God has given each one of us, and local schools play an essential part in developing those gifts.”
The All Our Children electronic book buddies program will happen again this coming school year and will involve significantly more partner schools and volunteers from Episcopal churches and organizations in the New York City area. For more information, visit allourchildren.net.
