Ascension Day and Transformation at Trinity

June 2, 2011

Trinity celebrated Ascension Day and the 165th anniversary of the church building's consecration with a Eucharist, rousing music, the announcement of new Transformational Fellows, and guest preacher Michael Curry, the Bishop of North Carolina.

Who, it turns out, is a fan of John Coltrane.

Briefly recounting the jazz musician's difficult struggle with addiction, Curry said at the beginning of his sermon, "A noted biography on John Coltrane is simply titled, Ascension. It changed how I was beginning to understand what this sacred feast is. It was about ascension in one man's life, trying to move beyond where he was and find that place where God dreams and intends him to be."

"God came among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to show us the way," he continued. "He came to show us how to become the human family of God. And in that, my friends, is our hope and salvation."

The 2011 Trinity Transformational Fellows, all from South Africa, were also announced. This year, the Fellows program was expanded to include global transformational leaders. The fellows were nominated by anonymous spotters, who were this year led by Bishop Joe Seoka of Pretoria, in South Africa.

The 2011 Fellows are Ann Meshe, Nandi Promise Tshaka, and Tshegofatso Lesenyeng Medupe. All three fellows are involved in ministries to persons or families affected by HIV/AIDS.

"By their actions," said the Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, Rector of Trinity Wall Street, "they show the possibilities for transformation that each of us can bring to a community and reflect the deep commitment to social change within the members of the worldwide Anglican Communion."

The service was attended by members of the congregation, staff, Trinity's vestry, and Transformational Fellows from years past.

Following the service, the Rev. Theodora Brooks, a 2008 Fellow and vicar of St. Margaret's Church in the South Bronx, said, "I am so excited to be part of a global community of Fellows. What an honor."

Ascension Day was the start of the 17 Days celebration at Trinity Wall Street, signifying the seventeen days between Ascension Day and Trinity Sunday on June 19. Worship, classes, community events, and volunteer opportunities are planned every day during the 17 Days -- and all are welcome.
