Director of Music and the Arts Announced

July 16, 2010

Special Announcement from the Vicar

I'm delighted to announce that Julian Wachner has accepted the position of Director of Music and the Arts of Trinity Wall Street. He will begin his tenure on Tuesday, September 7th.

The Director of Music and the Arts will oversee all liturgical, professional, and community music and arts programming, ensuring that Trinity's artistic efforts are fully integrated with its worship, educational, and social-justice goals and programs.

Julian has appeared on the world's leading stages including engagements with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Glimmerglass Opera, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Portland Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He comes to us from McGill University where he serves as associate professor of music and Principal Conductor of Opera McGill, a position he will maintain through the 2010-2011 academic year. Julian also serves as Music Director of The Washington Chorus, with whom he has a contract through 2015. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University's School of Arts.

Julian's early music career was shaped as a chorister at St. Thomas Choir School. His career has involved work with professional musicians as well as with amateur and community groups. He has a specific interest in the development of young artists having served on the teaching staff of the Young Artists Vocal and Composition program at Tanglewood. His arts leadership within the context of a congregation has been shaped by his tenure as Director of Music at Marsh Chapel at Boston University and Music Director at Montreal's Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul.

We will be issuing a formal public announcement early next week in addition to coverage on our website.

I am deeply grateful to the members of the congregation and wider Trinity community who participated in the search process, including and especially by holding the process in prayer. Enormous thanks goes to the music and arts staff for their continued excellence during this transition, and to Steven Fox, Acting Director of Music, who will continue until September 6th.

Blessings,
Anne+
The Rev. Canon Anne Mallonee, Vicar

I suspect the 2,100 organists at the AGO convention in Washington DC would also send their congratulations on this selection. Many of us heard Julian direct the Washington Choir and other forces at our closing concert last week. The music was magnificent and he did a great job!
