Fish Out of Water

June 22, 2007

Ever feel like a fish out of water? As people led by Jesus, we all have. We’ve felt vulnerable, but in new ways, jumping for that joyous vulnerability felt in God’s love.

Within our congregations, we care for one another while working for fundamental change. We worship the sacred while altering the systems that create poverty. We know that society is transformed when the Church’s presence is felt in deep and lasting ways.

The path to transformation holds neither secrets nor shortcuts. There are, however, shared habits among parishes engaged in the work: We listen, partner, and grow.

Listen
Listening is hard work, but doing so keeps the promise of hope made by churches. We listen to our neighbors, determining where and what kind of help is needed most.

Partner
Jesus said, “I need help in my work.” God has asked for our partnership, calling us to labor on, but not sending us out alone. The call is to build the kingdom together.

Grow
Social transformation can only begin with spiritual transformation. Seeing God in everyone is the foundation of social action, of showing mercy to those in need.

May we listen, partner, and grow in the months and years ahead together.

Faithfully,

The Rev. Dr. James Herbert Cooper, Rector
