Update: The dean of Haiti’s network of Episcopal Schools, the Rev. Canon Oge Beauvoir, wants to get 30,000 students back in classrooms by Easter. $140 sponsors a student. Donate, spread the word, and read more below.

As the country of Haiti begins the slow process of recovering from the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, the Episcopal Church in Haiti has begun to look at its ministry priorities for the coming months. First on the list: getting the 80,000 students who are part of the diocesan educational system back in school.

The Episcopal schools network serves students from preschool through high school and trade schools. In an email to Trinity staff, the Rev. Canon Oge Beauvoir, executive director of the network, reported that many schools outside of Port-au-Print and Leogane reopened in the weeks following the earthquake in tents and under trees, as teachers and students were afraid to be in potentially unstable buildings.

Beauvoir said the network is concentrating first on getting all preschool and elementary school children back to school first. The schools in Port-au-Prince and other affected areas are dealing with collapsed buildings, destroyed supplies, and of course, the loss of teachers and students.

"Those children are more vulnerable," he wrote, "and need some serious psychological assistance as part of the re-opening process."

It costs only $140 per year to fund an elementary student's education. Trinity Wall Street's Haiti relief efforts will be directed toward reopening the Episcopal schools throughout Haiti. Donate now to support Episcopal schools in Haiti.
