On October 14, New Yorkers (and beyond) will have the opportunity to experience not one but two versions of Israel in Egypt by George Frideric Handel.
Handel is perhaps most famous for his Messiah, which the Trinity Choir will perform in December. But Julian Wachner, Trinity Wall Street's director of music and the arts, is excited for those attending the concerts on October 14 to hear what is to many people a lesser known work.
"Israel in Egypt is dramatic and packed with pictorial elements, where Messiah is more reflective," he said.
The Trinity Choir performs the 1739 version of Part I at 1pm on October 14 in Trinity Church in a free concert that is open to the public. This performance will be webcast live at trinitywallstreet.org.
At 7:30pm that evening, the choir performs the 1756 version of the entire oratorio. Tickets to that concert can be purchased here, or watch online live.
Wachner said there are noticeable differences and similarities between the two versions of Part I that will be performed on October 14.
"It's interesting how Handel handled the text, " he said. "With a limited number of choices, it's amazing how ingenious those choices were."
