Audubon's monument in the Trinity Church Cemetery.
April 26, 2011 marks the 226th birthday of John James Audubon, the French-American ornithologist and painter best known for his book Birds of America.
Audubon is buried in Trinity Church Cemetery, located at 155th Street and Broadway in Upper Manhattan, which is near land he once owned. In 1893, the Academy of Sciences erected a monument over his grave. The Heritage Rose Foundation recently planted the "Audubon" rose near the monument.
