Haydn by the Numbers

October 21, 2009

In September 2009, the Trinity Choir's CD box set of Franz Josef Haydn's complete Masses was released by the Naxos classical music label. As the bicentenary of Haydn's death, 2009 has seen a great deal of interest in his music and is an excellent time for the release of what Haydn project coordinator and singer Richard Lippold hopes "will be among the definitive Haydn recordings." It's been an ambitious and longterm project for the choir, Rebel Baroque Orchestra, and other Trinity staff members. How ambitious?

The numbers tell the story:

8 CDs in the box set.

9 Years the Haydn project took to complete.

10 Years ago the Haydn project was first proposed to the rector and vestry.

12 Complete Masses.

60+ Rebel Baroque Orchestra members credited on the CDs.

75 Trinity Choir members who recorded the Masses.

493 Minutes of Haydn in the entire box set.

180 Hours of Haydn recorded for editing, mixing, and mastering.

The Complete Haydn Masses can be purchased in Trinity's gift shop or at naxos.com. The masses are also available for digital download at naxos.com or amazon.com.

What a great experience it was, recording these works in the magnificence of Trinity Church on Wall Street. It's an achievement we will all treasure, in an occupation whose repercussions seem so fleeting and temporary to us as performers. I hope the recording brightens the homes and lives of all those who acquire it. Peter Bucknell, Principal Violist 1999-present http://www.Toimes.com http://www.NYvideo.US
