Mourning for Moscow

March 30, 2010

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:30pm, clergy from St. Paul's Chapel will ring the Bell of Hope in remembrance of the victims of the Moscow Metro bombings. They will be joined by Andrey Yushmanov, Consul General, and Sergey Logachev, Deputy Consul General, of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York, as well as Fr. Archimandrite John Magramm of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.

The Bell of Hope stands in the churchyard of St. Paul's Chapel as an enduring memorial, symbolically ringing on occasions when the parish pays tribute to victims of terrorism. Following the tradition of New York City's firefighters salute to fallen comrades, St. Paul's clergy will toll the bell in four sets of five rings. The bell has also been rung following the bombings in London, Madrid, and Mumbai, for Virginia Tech victims, and on 9/11 anniversaries.

The Bell of Hope was a gift to the City of New York from the Lord Mayor of the City of London a year after the attacks on the World Trade Center buildings. It was created from the foundry in the East End of London where the original Liberty Bell was cast more than two centuries ago.
