Powerful Prisoner Advocacy: What Congregations Can Do

August 16, 2006

Rima Vesely-Flad , founder of the Interfaith Coalition of Advocates for Re-entry and Employment (ICARE) and a Trinity Grants partner, suggests a few ways congregations can actively advocate for prisoners who are re-entering society. Rima's work was first featured on this site in a video, which you can view using the link at the right.

1. Attend the "Restoring Justice" Conference, sponsored by the Presbytery of NYC and ICARE, on October 28. For more information, email socialwitness@presbynyc.org.

2. Support a formerly incarcerated person through a "Circles of Care" Restorative Justice program. Training for volunteers will begin in November 2006. For more information, email nyicare@earthlink.net.

3. Ask your congregation to support ICARE's "Restoration of Rights" advocacy platform. For more information, see www.nyicare.org.

4. Attend an ICARE legislative advocacy day in your home district and/ or Albany.

5. Organize a "Prison Sunday" or "Restorative Justice" forum at your place of worship.

6. Organize your congregation to donate books to college education programs and libraries in NYS prisons. For more information, email nyicare@earthlink.net.
