Every year, hundreds of thousands of children take a day away from school to go to work with their parents. Trinity Wall Street participates in the Take Our Children to Work Day every year – but this year a new twist was added to the day’s activities for the staff children. They spent their “lunch hour” helping with Trinity’s Brown Bag Lunch Program, a Faith in Action ministry which is helping feed the hungry in Lower Manhattan.
Since its inception in October 2009, more than 5000 lunches have been handed out to hungry people through the Brown Bag program. Volunteers pack the lunches on Sundays at coffee hour. The lunches are given away in Trinity’s churchyard every Tuesday and Thursday by a dedicated group of staff and congregational volunteers.
On Take Our Children to Work Day, the participants made decorations for the Brown Bag lunch station and were on hand to experience the program for themselves. Rather than just stand by and watch, all the children decided to get involved with the volunteers – handing out lunches, running bags out to the vendors on the street who often can’t afford the very food they are selling, and talking with those eating their lunches in the churchyard.
