In the next few years, Episcopalians around the country may get used to seeing their fellow parishioners at the local elementary or high school and at church. That's because the Episcopal Church's General Convention recently adopted a resolution calling on Episcopal parishes around the country to be involved with the public schools in their communities.
The General Convention resolution is a direct result of All Our Children, an initiative of the Diocese of New York and Trinity Wall Street to help churches create school partnerships. In 2008, eight pilot parishes began or extended a diverse range of community school partnerships throughout the diocese.
The resolution encourages Episcopalians and parishes to give at least 40 hours a year "in support of public education," and calls on the U.S. government to "support equity in public education for all young people."
Trinity Wall Street will hold an informational conference call about All Our Children on September 15, 2009. Those interested in learning more about the program should email allourchildren@trinitywallstreet.org or call 212.602.0710 for more information.

Here is an easy way for churches to get involved with local schools. . . An exciting new nonprofit lets teachers post wish lists of the classroom resources they need. Visitors can see exactly what's needed and how their tax-deductible contributions can help. Churches can easily create a page showing the schools they support and to invite their members to connect to the pages. Just click 'Groups' from the main menu. If you have any questions, we would love to hear from you.
