Trinity Church: All Lit Up

December 2, 2010

In 1846, just a month after the current Trinity Church building was consecrated, vestryman George Templeton Strong wrote in his diary about the church's largest stained glass window: "That west window will bring an epidemic of ophthalmia into the parish. With a bright afternoon's sun full upon it, it's a formidable thing to look at, as my eyes testify by their tingling."

In Strong's day, the window was so bright because there were no tall buildings west of Trinity – just the Hudson River. Strong's eyes would certainly be tingling today, with Trinity Church lit up as it never has been before.

The church is the site of a special Service of Lessons and Carols on Saturday, December 4, that will be filmed for broadcast during the Christmas season on ABC affiliate stations around the United States. The church, including the stained glass window which dazzled George Templeton Strong, has been fitted with special lighting for the production. A 12-kilowatt light placed in a fourth-floor window in Trinity's office building across the street from the church is lighting the window in a way that would be very familiar to Strong.

Lessons and Carols is a traditional Anglican liturgy that traces the birth of the Messiah from prophecy to fulfillment in scripture and song. Favorite Christmas carols and hymns are featured throughout the service, and will be sung by the Trinity Choir and congregation. All are invited to attend the service, and should plan to arrive at 3:30pm.

The special lighting can be seen at Trinity Church from Thursday, December 2 – Saturday, December 4. Drop by to see Trinity in a way you've never seen it before!
