We Work and Pray for Reconciliation and Peace

May 2, 2011

The morning after President Obama informed the nation of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, St. Paul’s Chapel was visited by former mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper greeted Giuliani on behalf of Trinity Wall Street and later led the Chapel’s Prayers for Peace -- a daily offering including a Litany of Reconciliation recited in the sanctuary of the old Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed by German bombs in WWII.

“We continue to pray for those whose lives were lost on September 11, their families, and those in the Armed Forces who have sacrificed so much to bring a measure of justice to this terrible tragedy,” said Dr. Cooper.

“Let us also reflect on the wisdom of Archbishop Desmond Tutu that justice requires reconciliation, and while we seek the end of violence, we work and pray for reconciliation and peace.”

It was the fourth time the 9-11 icons -- Giuliani and St. Paul’s -- had met. In 2002, Giuliani twice received awards at St. Paul's for his 9-11 era leadership. In 2001 he gave his farewell address to the city there. St. Paul’s, adjacent to Ground Zero, was for nine months after September 11 the site of 24-hour relief ministry for ground-zero workers, providing food, quiet, and pastoral counseling.
