What are the Millennium Development Goals?

June 13, 2007

Mary Getz, grassroots coordinator for the Episcopal Church’s government relations office, has a standard way of beginning the Millennium Development Goal workshops she holds in parishes throughout the country. “Is everyone here excited about the MDGs?” she asks, to an enthusiastic chorus of approval. “Great! Now name one goal,” she says. The muted response she almost always receives is proof that as a church we are excited and ready to help — but perhaps in need of a handy reference sheet like the one below.

1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2 Achieve universal primary education

3 Promote gender equality and empower women

4 Reduce child mortality

5 Improve maternal health

6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

7 Ensure environmental sustainability

8 Develop a global partnership for development with targets for aid, trade, and debt relief
