The Temple Burns

That’s the title of my article in the most recent issue of Trinity News.

Specifically, it’s about my liturgical fascination with the ritual burning of a massive-scale Temple at the Burning Man arts festival, held every summer in the middle of the Nevada Desert. More generally, it’s about how powerful archetypal forces spontaneously arise in any gathered group, and how we would do well to learn from those sources as we carry on the work of Christian tradition and shape our own ancient and new patterns.

Check it out here and let me know what you think. I’ll be blogging daily from Burning Man this year, satellite and cell links cooperating, as I participate again in this phenomenon of people making meaning out of used parts and fresh inspiration.

I read the article in the hard copy of Trinity News. Exciting! I enjoyed your comments, and bringing in Annie Dillard's observations. What a thought..... creating a liturgy by inviting/asking people to bring and do what they want to be in it. That would be transforming even in our stuffy churches! I'd never heard of Burning Man before; makes me want to go now. I'll look forward to your blog this year. Hank+

Worship is the single greatest investment of resources in any church's life, including Trinity Wall Street, and it is the primary lens that focuses our life together. Worship is a language that links us back through generations and yet is newly born in each moment!

This blog focuses more on primal patterns than technique --looking at how we are embodied souls needing to act out our faith. It is a reflecting pool for leaders of other congregations, for members of Trinity seeking to understand the patterns of the liturgy more fully, and for seekers who are aware of or interested in the power of ritual.
