Voices from the Trinity community

Bringing People and Ideas Together
by:
James Melchiorre

Vestry, clergy, and staff from Trinity Church Wall Street are meeting this weekend with Anglican and Episcopal partners from Latin America and the Caribbean region to discuss ways to strengthen the Church for the future.

The conference in Cartagena, hosted by the Diocese of Colombia, gives participants the chance to share ideas about building leadership and generating financial capacity by utilizing resources already available. Discussions will focus on how core values, often unique to the context of the people of each diocese, can influence decisions about leadership and capacity development.

Addressing the opening session, Trinity’s Rector, the Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, recalled visits to different parts of the Anglican Communion and hearing everywhere that the biggest challenges are developing leadership and financial capacity. That experience led Trinity to convene its partners to share ideas.

“Trinity doesn’t have answers. It’s our nature to learn from our partners,” Lupfer said. “There’s no book to give you the answers. This is peer learning.”

Dioceses represented at the conference span the Caribbean and Central and South America with discussions happening in three languages---Spanish, Portuguese, and English---facilitated by simultaneous translation. The schedule includes Holy Eucharist and Bible study each day and visits to local congregations in and near Cartagena for Sunday worship.

The Rev. Dr. Mark Bozzuti-Jones, the Trinity priest responsible for nurturing the partnerships in Latin American and the Caribbean, opened the conference with a reminder: “The wisdom is already in the room, so let’s speak to each other about leadership, talk about things that have worked so we can develop leadership modeled on the example of Jesus.”
