Over the past week, the baton was passed to the Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, 18th Rector of Trinity Wall street, both figuratively and literally.
On February 15, the Rev. Dr. James Cooper, 17th Rector, gave a baton to Lupfer. He quoted Hebrews when he handed it over: “Run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”
Dr. Cooper also returned the keys to Trinity Church to the vestry.
On Sunday, February 22, before the 11:15am service, warden Joseph Hakim handed the keys to Dr. Lupfer outside of Trinity Church. Lupfer unlocked the doors and David Jette, head verger, led the way into the church to begin the service. You can watch the ceremony at the beginning of Sunday’s webcast here.
This ceremony is based on Trinity’s charter, which states that the church and rectory are under the care of the rector until he dies or retires, at which time they return to the vestry, which then passes them on to next rector.
Lupfer will be installed as the 18th Rector on Ascension Day, May 14, 2015, at a liturgical service from the Book of Common Prayer officiated by the Rt. Rev. Andrew Dietsche, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
