The Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, Trinity's rector, along with nine members of the Trinity vestry and senior ministry team are in Asia this week meeting with current and potential partners. Peter Ng, Program Officer for Asia and the Pacific for the Episcopal Church, also joined the trip.
They met Elder Fu Xianwei, the Chairperson of National Committee of Three–Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches in China (TSPM) in Shanghai.
Elder Fu Xianwei visited Trinity In 2011, when Trinity donated funds for a stained glass altar window in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Shanghai.
According to the 2011 vestry minutes, "The TSPM headquarters is in Shanghai, adjacent to the former Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral that served in the Anglican era as the seat of the Presiding Bishop of China. After years of neglect and use as a cinema and government office, the church has been painstakingly restored to its historic state…. Our participation enhances that of the Episcopal Church and places a marker for Trinity’s building relations and exchanges.”
The group from Trinity also visited the Shanghai Cultural Plaza. Vestry member and architect Fred Bland designed the building but had never seen it in person.
They are now continuing their trip in Hong Kong.
