Concerts at One: Sunken Cathedral

This spring, the Concerts at One series focuses on water justice, the subject of the 2017 Trinity Institute National Theological Conference on climate change and water crises. These Sunken Cathedral concerts feature multiple versions and interpretations of Debussy’s classic and prescient prelude La Cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) alongside a variety of newer compositions focusing on climate change and water, including John Luther Adam’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Become Ocean.

"Life on this earth first emerged from the sea. As the polar ice melts and sea level rises, we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean." – John Luther Adams

The title of the piece is based on a tribute by John Cage about the music of his colleague Lou Harrison: “Listening to it we become ocean.” This spring, the series also includes three concerts celebrating Lou Harrison’s centennial, two of which take place in the evening.

As always, Concerts at One features guest artists with Trinity’s in-residence new music orchestra NOVUS NY performing on the third Thursday of each month.
