“Life without music is unthinkable. Life without music is academic. That is why my contact with music is a total embrace.” —Leonard Bernstein

Trinity will celebrate the centennial of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with a wide-ranging selection of the iconic composer-conductor’s music, as well as works by other notable New York City composer-conductors including Bernstein’s lifelong friend Lukas Foss, as well as Gustav Mahler, Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, and Julian Wachner. The series launches during the April and May Concerts at One series in St. Paul’s Chapel, and concludes with a three-concert finale (May 31-June 2). With a special emphasis on lesser-known and vocal compositions, the concerts will feature resident contemporary music orchestra NOVUS NY and a roster of North America’s leading instrumental and vocal soloists, all under Wachner’s direction.

Folded into the programming of TOTAL EMBRACE is the culmination of Mass Reimaginings, Trinity's long-term commissioning project. Five of today's most diverse and compelling composers have been invited to offer their 21st-century take on the traditional Mass. With an emphasis on outstanding female composers, characteristic of much of Trinity’s programming, TOTAL EMBRACE will include the world premiere of a mass by Sarah Kirkland Snider, as well as masses by Paola Prestini, Jonathan Newman, Daniel Felsenfeld, and Julian Wachner.
