Compline by Candlelight

Sundays at 8pm | St. Paul's Chapel (Broadway and Fulton Street)

The final service of the traditional monastic Ritual of the Hours, Compline—from the Latin verb complere, meaning to complete—is one of the oldest services of the Christian Church. Darkened and candlelit, St. Paul's Chapel is the ideal environment for this chant-based service featuring The Choir of Trinity Wall Street in intimate offerings of chant, improvisation, psalmody, and newly composed sacred works. By juxtaposing the old with the new, Compline inspires us to reflect by connecting with the past while refreshing us with current creativity. Free and open to all.

End the day in a way so old it’s new.

Compline is an ancient half-hour candlelit service featuring the Trinity Choir. “These are the church’s bedtime prayers, and they mark that transition from day into night,” explains the Rev. Daniel Simons, priest for liturgy and pilgrimage. “We pray Compline on Sunday evening as a transition before the beginning of the week, as a way to reflect, renew, and refresh.”
