11:15am Sermon, The Rev. Winnie Varghese, "Shiphrah and Puah"

August 23, 2020

Midwives Shiphrah and Puah worked every angle to protect the future of the Hebrew people, defying Pharaoh's order to kill male newborns. When the fearful powerful define an "other" and deputize others to take their lives, when fear is generated by pointing to Black bodies or the poor, and while "we are many generations and cultures away from this time," says the Rev. Winnie Varghese, "we remember the holy, revolutionary, death-defying, liberating actions of these women... and stand here in history with the task of freedom and hope in our own eyes." The readings are Exodus 1:8-2:10; Psalm 124; Romans 12:1-8; and Matthew 16:13-20. Watch the sermon.
