Epiphany Sermon, The Rev. Matthew A. Welsch: "The Magi: Disrupters, Prophets, Guides"

January 6, 2021

“We have a tendency to downplay the Magi and their atypical baby shower gifts” preaches the Rev. Matthew A. Welsch on the feast of the Epiphany. Yet, their offerings were prophetic and precious, “a sign that somehow these wise, unsettling outsiders already know Mary’s son," and were "in support of God’s insurgency against the powers of this world.“ They were not “rosy-cheeked, affable kings sweeping in on their camels" but astrologers who followed a risky new path after witnessing the birth of a movement they don't quiet understand. Where are you willing to walk with the good news of Jesus? What gifts do you offer to God, however unexpected or unconventional? The scriptures are Isaiah 60:1–6; Ephesians 3:1–12, and Matthew 2:1–12.
