J. S. Bach - Heaven and Earth

September 10, 2016

The 4x4 Baroque Music Festival returns for its eighth year with a quartet of hour-long concerts to close out the summer.

These concerts bring together some of New York’s best baroque music specialists under the artistic direction of Avi Stein, Associate Organist and Chorusmaster at Trinity Church Wall Street and faculty member at the Juilliard School. Performers include Juilliard faculty Robert Mealy and Gonzalo Ruiz, as well as luminaries of New York’s thriving early music scene: Ezra Seltzer, Beth Wenstrom, Priscilla Herreid and vocal stars Sherezade Panthaki, Tyler Duncan, and Jesse Blumberg.

All concerts take place in Trinity Church Wall Street at 7pm. Admission is free.

Septmember 6: Before Bach
An exploration of 17th century German music that influenced Johann Sebastian Bach, this program includes fanciful and dazzling trios for violins and viola da gamba by Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Adam Reincken, the composers who caused Bach to abscond from his job and travel 200 miles to learn from these masters.

September 7: Tripla Concordia
Though the great powers of England and France often quarreled across the channel, they found unity in their mutual attraction to the Italian sonata. This program investigates how virtuoso music for the violin was shaped by its new homelands.

September 9: Apollo and Daphne
Handel’s mini-opera is a spectacular early masterpiece of musical drama, foreshadowing his great operas yet to come.

Septmeber 10: J. S. Bach - Heaven and Earth
Across almost every genre of his day, Bach’s genius was as wide-ranging as it was profound. This program presents some of his most beloved masterpieces from the coffeehouse to the church.
