Thursday Sermon, The Rev. Winnie Varghese: "Hearing God Through the Noise"
There exists a stark parallel between our current moment and the story of Elijah’s desperation, resistance, and victory over Ahab. “The victory is clear,” preaches the Rev. Winnie Varghese, “God has clearly won the day,” and yet Ahab continues to chase Elijah down with the full force of the Government. She reminds us, “God was not in the wind-smashing rocks; in the fire extinguishers on the heads of police. God was not in the earthquake; not on that heretical cross, gallows and noose on the lawn of our Capitol. God was not in the fire of every gun that has become god in this nation.” God, rather, is found by Elijah in the “minute stillness, the gap in the noise, the intake of breath.” May we, like Elijah, hold fast, breathe, and dare to believe that with God’s help, better days lie ahead. The readings are 1 Kings 19:9–18 and John 17:6–11.
