Thursday Sermon, The Rev. Winnie Varghese: "Hildegard von Bingen: Sounding the Divine in the World"
12th century Doctor of the Church, Hildegard von Bingen was a polymath scientist, theologian, correspondent of kings, composer, and documenter. Placed in the care of a female hermit, she was born isolated from the great wonders happening outside of Europe and yet became a profoundly influential voice who brought the sacred divine light to the dark, remote places of her world. When unconventional, disruptive voices speak their truths in today’s “modern day forests of city streets” preaches the Rev. Winnie Varghese, their words too ”explode the silences of the pages of history, bearing the divine” in a way we didn’t know we could-or needed-to witness. The readings are Ecclesiasticus 43:1–2, 6–7, 9–12, 27–28 and John 3:16–21.
